Blu-ray is so old, its all about downloads!
For a few weeks now, Microsoft have been talking about their take on the disc format war. Before they lost the war, I believe HD-DVD was going to win, primarily down to them being able to block the use of Blu-Ray of 90% of PCs. However, as we all know, Blu-Ray won.
For the past few weeks, Microsoft have said nothing regarding HD-DVD, I don’t even think they have even emitted that they have lost, only Toshiba have. They have only been rejected claims of a Blu-Ray Xbox 360. However, now they have lost, its been all about downloading. They have been expressing how the use of storing films on discs are not the future, but downloading films is. Only a few weeks ago, they were saying how great HD-DVD is for the future!
To me it looks like that can’t accept that they have lost. I’m not a Microsoft hater, but it does look like that they can’t accept losing to Sony. Microsoft have managed to come up with a their new idea, very quickly, to how we will be watching our movies in the next few years.

Blu Ray ftw =) All i can say about downloads in the future, is who has a 3TB harddrive?? When things like games such as Resistance on PS3 take up 22GB of the Bluray disk, companies will eventually use up the whole 50GB space of the disk. If every game/film with HD content etc. is downloaded to your HDD your gonna fill it up damn quit when considering additional saves when it is in use. Also imagine downloading 10GB worth of data, its gonna take hours even with the fastest of connections.. I think High Capacity Disks are a great idea.

Yeh, very true Xen0. MGS4 has used up 50GB! But I suppose HDD are getting bigger. My PC has a 7GB HDD, made in 1999, now its 2008, we have 1TB drive. They will get far big. I think currently HD movies on Xbox Live take up 5GB.

Yes HDD, sizes will increase for sure, but so will sizes of content. It is a lot easier and for more transferable to use a disk where you can put it anywhere. Also instant purchase from shops is a bonus.

Game content easily fits on DVD. The only reason that Metal Gear needs so much disc space is because they’re using it for HD cinematic sequences which by definition are not directly related to game play. In other words, you could skip those movies and progress in the game would not be affected. Sure, you might miss some of the drama of the story, but viewing these is optional.
Games are not movies. They load up all of their data at the start of a level and only go to disc in between levels or for movie sequences. Your own experience at playing video games will demonstrate this to you. You can only load a finite amount of code and data into the console’s RAM and VRAM, and that’s just about 2GB. Unless cinematic sequences are integral to game play, (or the studio has the budget) it’s not likely that many game developers can justify the added expense of paying for that number of hours of movies to be written, created, edited, etc.
It’s inevitable that games will use more and more disc space. That’s just the nature of technology. However, there’s no real rush. It’s mostly something that Sony came up with in order to justify adding the Blu-ray drive to their game console. Microsoft would most definitely have included an HD DVD drive in their console if their game developers had complained about disc space shortages, and 360 developers would have put games out on HD DVD if they needed the space that badly.

The thing is that downloading things is also old it is going to be all about live steaming so downloading will not be nesserey. as all the data will be stored on large severs in warehouse somewhere in the USA. this will also be and advantage because computer prises will come down and the world will be saved
